Club Photo Shoot - 29th December 2013

BCC Photo Shoot Portavade Sligo 29th December 2013 TMP_6831.jpg

Despite the frosty start to the morning, a few club members braved the elements to come out and explore part of the Sligo coastline on this final shoot of 2013. We arrived on the beach at Portavade, a few miles outside Ballisodare in plenty of time for sunrise. Later, we headed along the coast to the beautiful and wild Dunmoran Strand and ended up at Easkey Harbour, just ahead of the rain and what turned into a miserable afternoon. We certainly saw the best part of the day.

The club committee would like to take this opportunity to wish all members of Boyle Camera Club a very Happy New Year.
We look forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting on Tuesday 14th January at 8pm in St. Joseph's Resource Centre, Boyle. New members are always welcome. Agenda for the meeting will be posted here shortly.

Club Meeting - Tuesday 10th December

Welcome
Club Chairperson, Andy Rimmer opened the meeting. The main item here was the club's annual Christmas party scheduled for Friday 13th December in Dodd's Bar, Boyle.
As it turned out, the party was a relaxed and enjoyable event. The club are grateful to Dennis and his family, to Joe and all the musicians that contributed to the entertainment and 'Troy' for the food.

BCC Flickr Pool - Photo of the Month
Each month, club members registered with Flickr are encouraged to put their photos into the Boyle Camera Club Flickr Pool. From the pool, a committee member selects an image and discusses it at the beginning of the meeting. This month, Marion Noone selected Peter Kelly's photo, 'A Walk in the Park' and Jason Mallard selected Brian Munnelly's, 'Sligo Christmas Fayre'. Marion spoke about both images and her (and Jason's) reasons for the selection.

5-Minute Photo
Matthew Gammon spoke about one of his recent Black and White images.

Presentation
Hugh Rooney presented his 'Valencia Project' and used it to discuss the principles of photographic composition, perspective, point of interest, framing and effective focal length. Hugh is a pbase user and says how he finds the site a very useful inspirational resource. He discussed how he usually spends considerable time researching his subjects and preparing for each photo excursion. His talk was inspirational and informative. View more of Hugh's work HERE.

BCC Participation in IPF National Shield 2013

This weekend (Saturday 9th November), the Irish Photographic Federation are running their National Shield event at Malahide Community School in Dublin. The National Shield is an inter-club competition for all members of camera clubs who are deemed to be intermediate photographers. This year, for the first time and on rather short notice, the committee decided to enter Boyle Camera Club in the competition. Because of the very limited time available, in great haste the committee selected photos from the club Flickr stream and approached the individual photographers to participate. As a club, we are required to submit a panel of eight colour and eight monochrome mounted prints. The panels have now been assembled, printed and mounted and are presently en route to Malahide where they will be displayed on Saturday morning with work from other camera clubs across the country.

Boyle Camera Club have been affiliated to the IPF since it's founding in 2007 but we have not often participated in IPF competitive events. As our membership grows and matures, we hope to be more active regarding our engagement with the IPF and will be encouraging members to consider developing work for the IPF Distinctions in the near future.
(View recent Distinctions Panels HERE)

In the meantime, we wish participating members every success this weekend in Malahide. We will post details regarding the club's panel submission here after the event.

Club Photo Shoot - Sunday 27th October - Mohill Horse Fair

BCC Members at Mohill Horse Fair - 27th Oct 2013 TMP_5193
Many members intending to participate in the scheduled photo shoot to Fowley Falls were disappointed this weekend when the weather men advised us to stay under our duvets. The storm predicted to send carpenters into a frenzy of raft building, never arrived! Those that took up the offer of participating in some indoor photography assembled in Boyle and encouraged by the parting clouds and blue sky, decided to head to the Horse Fair in Mohill. The rain stayed away and we had plenty of craic and took some photos too. Last time we intend to be dictated to by the weather men!!

In the photo; Derek, Jordan, Geoff, Peter, Joe, Margie, Martina, Dermot and Des. Also there were Jason and Tony.

Printing Service for BCC Members

One of the items that was flagged during discussions at our recent AGM was the issue of PRINTING. Printing is certainly to be encouraged since printing photos, being the obvious consolidating factor in the photographic process, is not practiced regularly by many members. Home printing seems to be a daunting, complicated and expensive option for amateur digital photographers, often with unsatisfactory results. Empowering members with the confidence to make their own prints through workshops and informative presentations will be one of the areas we hope to address in the year ahead. Last year we had a number of Motivations with an optional 'print' category and this will certainly continue. In fact, this year we intend to put considerable emphasis on demystifying post-production and printing processes.

Conor Dowling, who judged this month's Motivation, is returning to the club after a busy year being involved with developing the Boyle Civic Art Collection. For the past number of years, he has printed members photos for our annual exhibition in Boyle Library. Conor is now offering a very competitive printing service to club members who wish to print photos for Motivation submission and framing.

Inkjet Prints in Colour and Black & White on semi-gloss/lustre, professional quality photo paper.
A4 - €3.50
A3 and A3+ - €12.00

Club members can send EDITED, HIGH RESOLUTION, JPEG files via WeTransfer (see note below) to info@sonarsolutions.com
Prints can be collected by arrangement at Boyle Enterprise Centre.

This is a really easy solution and great deal for members who wish to finally print those special images gathering dust on hard-drives. Seriously, no excuses now!!

WeTransfer is a FREE on-line, file sharing website where files up to 2GB in size can be uploaded. The user adds the email address of the intended recipient of the file, then WeTransfer sends a notification email to the recipient who can then download the file to their computer. WeTransfer holds the file on it's server for one-week, at which point they remove it. The beauty of this facility is that email servers do not get clogged or emails bounced back to sender. A very useful site to have 'bookmarked'!

Derek Fetherstone wins IFA Farmers Journal Photo Competition

Congratulations to Derek Fetherstone on winning the IFA Farmers Journal Calendar Competition with his excellent photo taken on Inisbofin, titled "A Summer Breeze". See more of Derek's photos on his Flickr site HERE.

Camera Phone Photography - An Appreciation

This from Jason Mallard.
"Camera phone photography continues to separate photographers in their opinion on its validity. I have long been in the pro camera phone photography camp and enjoy the work of photographers like Richard Koci Hernandez. If you have not seen seen his work then I suggest you treat yourself and see what is possible with a meager camera phone and a great (photographers) eye.

Mr R.K.H has a video (below) on his thoughts on this new era of photography that struck a chord with my own views. What ever your own opinion (you are welcome to have one :o)) I thought it would be a good one to share with the members."

Jason's has also prepared a very extensive document on Camera Phone Photography that he is sharing with members HERE.
Well done Jason.

Members should send their motivation entries to Des at; motivationpics@gmail.com on or before Friday 6th September.

At a recent committee meeting, there was a proposal to review the current monthly Motivation and Des will be discussing a new approach to this very important club activity at the September meeting.

Full Agenda for September's meeting will be posted here shortly.

Elphin Agricultural Show - Saturday 31st August

The Boyle Summer Show was a great success this year and there were plenty of excellent photo opportunities for camera holders on the day. In the tent however, it was obvious that the photography section was very poorly represented. Perhaps the club needs to be more active promoting participation in this aspect of our local show next year! Well done to the participants though, in particular to 9-year old Gráinne Rooney, who won the Roscommon Herald perpetual trophy.

Members might be interested in taking part in the Elphin Agricultural Show which takes place this Saturday, 31st August. There is a photography section which has various categories;

The Recent Photography of Hugh Rooney

Club member Hugh Rooney has produced some very noteworthy photography on his travels around Ireland and abroad over the years. His recent images of the Architecture of Valencia in Spain are a particularly beautiful set that are getting a lot of attention on-line. We could all learn a few things from the way Hugh composes a photography. Have a look at Hugh's work HERE.

Thank You for Coming.

Boyle Camera Club Exhibition during Boyle Arts Festival July-August 2013 TMP_2759
Photo: Tony Murphy

Boyle Camera Club would like to thank everyone that came to visit our recent exhibition at Boyle Library during the Boyle Arts Festival. This year's very successful exhibition saw over 30 prints being sold, the proceeds of sales will be donated to The Childrens' Hospital in Crumlin. Members of the public were particularly impressed by the photos of Derek Fetheston 'Watching Over You' and Joe Kennedy's 'The Stables".
The club also held a raffle during the exhibition in the hope of raising funds to purchase a new data projector. This was also well subscribed to and the winner, Fionnuala Meagher, has received the framed print of her choice from the exhibition.
As always, the photo slideshow proved very popular for visitors and Joe has promised to make this available to view on this site shortly.

Club members should note that photos from the exhibition will be available to collect at the next club meeting.
Next club meeting will take place on Tuesday 10th September at 8pm in St.Joseph's Resource Centre, Boyle. New members are always welcome.

Club Meeting Tuesday 14th May

The May club meeting very much followed the proposed agenda.

Opening the meeting, Chairperson Andy Rimmer commented on the positive local response to the club's recent exhibition at Coffey's in Carrick-on-Shannon. It was unfortunate that the proposed follow-up exhibition in Roscommon did not happen due to the venue being unavailable. That said, members should prepare their work for the club's annual exhibition during the Boyle Arts Festival. Full details regarding the submission of photographs in the post below.

The schedule for the Hot Air Balloons photo shoot this weekend, in association with The Gathering, has been posted on the forum. Members should make every effort to see this great spectacle at Lough Key Forest Park weither viewed close-up or from afar!

Roscommon Tourism have been in touch with Andy and are interested in promoting members images of the county. Members having appropriate images should contact Andy for details.

5-Minute Photo
Geoff Percy has set himself the challenge of photographing the waterfalls of the North West region and is in the process of compiling a series for black and white. Geoff showed some of his work from this project and discussed the shooting and post-production involved in making the images. Great subject matter and beautifully photographed too.

Presentation
Tony Murphy discussed shooting low-light interiors and exposure bracketing, a process whereby multiple varying exposures are produced to capture the full dynamic range of tones from a scene, then married in post-production to give an accurate and balanced result.
