Season's Greetings Everyone!

Wishing you all a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas and Good Luck and Good Health in the New Year!

Don't forget that our monthly motivation for members is for 'Christmas' . That can be anything you like, so long as it has a Christmas theme! The deadline for submissions is January 1st 2010. As always, you can submit up to two pictures which will then be included in a slideshow at our next meeting, Tuesday January 12th in the Royal Hotel, Boyle. Please make sure you format your pictures properly and include your name and the name of the photograph in the file name.
Our quarterly competition is 'Wintertime' and the deadline for that is January 31st 2010. For the competition you can again submit two images, but this time you must also include the category you are in (beginner, intermediate or advanced) in the file name, alongside your name and the title of the picture. Good Luck!

Christmas Greetings to All our members

Peter Boalch - Lets Rock

Seasonal Cheer All Round!
There was a good turn out for the Club's Christmas party, although there were a few familiar faces missing due to illness (if that's you, please get well soon!) and people with other commitments at this busy time of year. A good time was had by all, with music, food and good company – and a few photographs of our recent photo-shoots, of course.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, January 12th, when Peter will repeat his short slideshow about the planned trip to the Aran Islands in June, for the benefit of those who missed it. He'll also be taking deposits for the accommodation then.
Meanwhile, there are a few items for your consideration:

The Drogheda Photographic Club is hosting the Tony Dunne Memorial Salon and encourages all photographers to enter. The closing date for entries is January 31st 2010. Rules are here and can also be downloaded from Droghada Photographic Club.

A trip to Athlone IT is planned for February 13th, when there will be workshops organised by the IPF. More details to follow.
We have an international invitation to participate in the 30th annual George W. Glennie Nature Interclub Exhibition, which will be held by the Merrimack Valley Camera Club, North Andover, MA on Saturday, March 27, 2010. More details here.

Club member Martina Morris is helping to fund her forthcoming Touch Ireland charity trip to Africa through sales of her photographs in Boyle's new eco-shop, The Greenway Emporium. She has already made some well-deserved sales and hopes for more. Other members can also sell their photographs through The Greenway Emporium – just call in for details.

Season's greetings to everyone – may you enjoy the festive season, and have a happy and peaceful Christmas, and good health and happiness in the coming year!

Peter Gordon - Explore Light - Workshops and Exhibition

Explore Light - New Workshops

An entire range of new courses can now be viewed on our remodeled workshops page. We are now offering in addition to our Wicklow Weekend courses, West of Ireland workshops, night courses, seminars and international photo tours to the United States. This large scale expansion reflects the success of our courses over the past few years and our desire to teach in new environments and locations.

While our courses are geared towards landscape photography the skills we teach can be applied to many other genres. Our goal is to show you specific landscape techniques allowing you to take real control of your camera and previsualise outcomes that capture high quality imagery in any situation. We have a course to suit every budget from one day seminars to photo tours to the USA.

Christmas gift vouchers are now available which can be redeemed against workshops or any of our fine art prints.

Exhibition

Explore Light will be holding a new exhibition entitled 'The Land' which opens in Dublin next week. The new exhibition features a selection of previously unprinted work and opens December 9th in the Smock Alley Theatre, West Essex Street, Temple Bar and runs until December 23rd.

The range of work which will be exhibited can now be viewed in 'The Land' gallery on our website. The show will feature a series of large canvases as well as mid range sized prints down to 10x8 inch sizes. The gallery is spacious and centrally located in the city centre so we are very excited to get our work up on the walls. We will be opening the show on Wednesday the 9th so we would love if you could join us for a glass of wine and a chat between 6 and 9pm.

Christmas Party on Tuesday!

Time to dust off the glad rags – our next meeting is a Christmas Party. Meet as usual (second Tuesday of the month – December 8th) in the Royal Hotel at 8pm – but this will be a break from our usual format as we enjoy a social meeting. There will be musical entertainment, light buffet food, a raffle for all kinds of goodies – and the chance to let your hair down, camera optional!
We'll start with some notices (stuff you need to know about), then the slide shows of the last two photo-shoots will run.
After that, its a chance to get to know your fellow photographers a bit better.

  1. All members welcome – if you joined since October 2008, you are still a member until the end of 2009!
  2. If you've ordered the Tom Ang 'Digital Photography Masterclass' book, come with your €12 so you can take it home.
  3. If you haven't collected your pictures from the BAF exhibition in the Library in July, they will be there for you on Tuesday evening (or call into the Greenway Emporium for them).
  4. Peter will be taking names and deposits for the weekend trip to the Aran Islands in June.

Eagles Flying - Photoshoot - 15th November 2009

BCC Photo-Shoot - Eagles Flying November 2009
Camera Club members at the Eagles Flying Photo-Shoot

So how just how did we manage to fix such good weather for our photo-shoot to 'Eagles Flying', the Irish Raptor Research Centre in Ballymote, County Sligo on Sunday? After our last grey, rainy day out to Drumcliffe, we were hoping for some better weather and against the odds, we headed off in the sunshine to photograph a flying display of eagles, owls and other birds of prey. Although closed for the winter, the Centre opened especially for the 31 members who came out.

The Centre is home to 350 animals and birds from 75 different species including a Harris Hawk that was partial to Peter's hat and a saddleback pig that liked the look of Tony! We enjoyed a lively commentary from Lothar Muschketat, assisted by his wife Regina, son Alex, and helper Stephen, and watched eagles, owls, hawks and vultures swoop and dive overhead for rewards of food.

The Centre is a sanctuary for injured and endangered animals and birds – and we heard how there has been an upsurge of abandoned owls after doting parents copied the Harry Potter books and bought their children pet owls, but then couldn't care for them. The Centre is also temporary home to some gannets and a swan who will fly back into the wild when they are fit enough.

The fine weather meant we were lucky to have an outdoor flying display - the Centre now offers winter-time indoor displays in a purpose-built building on the site. If you missed the shoot, Eagles Flying is well worth a visit – a beautiful setting, lots of birds and animals to view and pet (guinea pigs, rabbits, donkeys and others), and the live show is very entertaining. Visitors can see indoor birds of prey flying displays from December 1st until Christmas Eve, at 6pm daily.

There was a good turn out for our meeting in the Royal Hotel. Members gathered to hear the outcome of the 'Autumn' quarterly competition, which was judged by Dublin photographer, Sean Kennedy.

Congratulations to the winners:

A slide show of Motivation submissions on 'Creative Lighting' was shown by Joe Kennedy and members were reminded that there is still time to submit pictures from the photoshoot at Drumcliff and Mullaghmore.

Peter Boalch told everyone of our plans for a weekend away in the Aran Islands, on the weekend of June 12th/13th 2010. Peter leads our next photoshoot on Sunday, November 15th, to the 'Eagles Flying' centre in Ballymote.

Louise Cole invited members to submit photos for sale to the new shop in the Market Yard, Boyle, The Greenway Emporium, which showcases Fair Trade and ethical gifts from around the world, plus locally made crafts. A window space in the shop has been offered for exclusive use by the club.
Louise also asked members if they'd like a Christmas Party at their next meeting in December – and a show of hands revealed most people are up for that!

Albert Watson - Hitchcock with Goose, 1973
The final part of the meeting was a presentation by Tony Murphy on one of his favourite photographers, Albert Watson, who has photographed many world-famous celebrities. The talk challenged members to consider that sometimes unlikely photographic work can be seen as fine art.

Club Meeting - Tuesday 10th November

Packed agenda for Tueday Night's meeting!

Members are reminded that the next club meeting will be on Tuesday, November 10th at 8pm in the Royal Hotel, Bridge Street, Boyle.

Our agenda for the evening will include a slideshow of the entries in the 'Autumn' quarterly competition and announcement of the winners. There will also be a slide show of motivation images on the subject of 'Creative Light'. We will have information on next year's weekend away in June, details of our Christmas function, news of our next motivation and quarterly competitions, plus news of new exhibition space in Boyle town centre. Tony Murphy will present some images from a famous photographer and lead a discussion about what makes a good or bad photograph.

Our next photo-shoot is on Sunday, November 15th, when Peter Boalch leads a trip to Ballymote in County Sligo to enjoy a flying display of birds of prey at the 'Eagles Flying' centre. This trip will cost €10 each for admission. Some members will already have been to the centre earlier this year, when heavy snow left some of us unable to travel, so a return trip was arranged. Meet in the car park in the Crescent, Boyle, for car pooling at 9.30am, or meet at 'Eagles Flying' at 10.15am for a 10.30am start. As always, for insurance reasons, this will be a members-only event.

Photo Shoot - Drumcliff and Mullaghmore, Co. Sligo

Photo Shoot - Drumcliff October 2009.jpg

The Colour Grey!
A group of 23 intrepid photographers from Boyle Camera Club braved the elements for a photoshoot this morning (Sunday, October 18th). It was a grey day all round, with visibility very poor as we met up at Drumcliffe Church, in County Sligo, burial place of the poet W.B. Yeats. Members did their best to be creative with what little colour there was around us in the drizzle, before we headed for the cafe for a welcome break and a warming cup of coffee. We then moved on to the harbour at Mullaghmore, which hadn't been in our original plan, but it was decided upon as a destination with marginally more to photograph on such a dismal day.

Our photoshoots are a great social get-together and are a popular way to meet with like-minded people, pick up ideas and swap technical information and camera techniques. Participants are invited to send in their photographs asap and they will be shown as a slide show at the next club meeting in November.

The new committee meets this week (on Wednesday evening) to discuss plans for the coming year. Information will be posted here in due course.

Members are reminded that although we have had the AGM, subscriptions are not renewable until January, after the club year was changed to run from January to December.

New Committee Elected at AGM - 13th Oct 2009

A Message to members from Louise Cole, Newly Elected Chairperson - Boyle Camera Club

"It was a wonderful honour to be elected Chairperson at our AGM earlier this week. I will do my best to steer the club onwards and upwards!

It has been a great privilege for me to be a committee member since the founding of the club back in September 2007, first as Secretary and latterly as PRO. I am taking the helm at a very exciting time in the club's development; we have a structured approach to meetings, almost 80 members are involved, we have regular photo-shoots, and a blossoming affiliation to the IPF.

We will, of course, miss the input at committee level of retiring Chairman, Sean O'Dowd, and Technical Adviser, Tony Murphy, co-founders of the Club. I thank them both for the enormous contribution they have made and no doubt will continue to make, since they have both promised to support us behind the scenes, but without the responsibility of committee duties.

At the AGM, two new committee members joined the team: Joe Kennedy and Paraic Brennan. Meanwhile, stalwarts Dermot Devine as Secretary and Kit O'Connor as Treasurer, continue their roles for the coming year, as does Peter Boalch as joint Competitions Secretary. Conor Dowling continues on the committee, although he has stepped down as joint Competitions Secretary to focus on developing our liaison with the IPF. I look forward to working with them all, on your behalf, in the coming year.

I hope to see many of you on Sunday (October 18th) for our next photo-shoot. We will be exploring Yeats Country – the parts of County Sligo made famous by the poet WB Yeats. We will be meeting first in the Crescent car park, Boyle, at 9am for a briefing and car pooling. If you miss that, join us at Drumcliff Church, burial place of the poet, at approximately 9.45am. As ever, because of insurance issues, this will be a members-only event. We plan to take in the beach at Lissadel, Lough Gill, and if we have time, Glencar Waterfall. We plan to be back in Boyle well before the start of the Terry Fox Run, which takes over the town, starting at 3pm!

Best wishes

Louise"

Nobel Prize for inventors of the Digital Sensor

Boyle Camera Club members might be interested to know that on Tuesday 6th October, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics to Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith, inventors who worked with light. The two Americans developed the digital sensor that revolutionized photography. Boyle and Smith created the first successful Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) in 1969 while working at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey.

Boyle is a Canadian and U.S. citizen and retired in 1979. Smith is a U.S. citizen who retired in 1986. The two of them will share half of the 10 million Krona (U.S. $1.4 million) prize.

I thought you might find the Boyle association worth noting:-)

Boyle Camera Club - Second Annual Photographic Exhibition 2009

Boyle Camera Club - Photographic Exhibition - Opens 21st July 2009

Boyle Camera Club will have another fantastic exhibition of photographs on public display!

Tuesday July 21st, sees the opening of our Second Annual Exhibition as part of Boyle Arts Festival. The display of stunning photographs takes place in the Town Council Room of Boyle Library, which is in the basement of King House.

Members and guests are invited to toast our success at an informal launch at 7pm that evening.

The ‘Love Where You Live’ exhibition will then continue until the end of the Festival on Friday, July 31st. Admission is free and entrance is via the main Library, when usual Library opening hours apply*. There is an exception on Sunday July 26th and Monday July 27th, when the Library is closed – on those two days only, we have access to the exhibition through King House, from 11am until 5pm.

Please come and see what exceptional talent we have amongst our members – everyone is welcome. We have beginners using compacts and experts using the latest SLRs, but you may be hard pressed to tell the pictures apart! All of the pictures will be on sale – mounted and framed, or as unmounted prints. There will also be members’ photos displayed on a slide show which will run continuously during the exhibition. Proceeds from the sale of prints will again go to charity – this time, we have chosen to support St Vincent de Paul.

Club Meeting 8th July 2009

Club Meeting Boyle Photo Shoot June 2009
'Chilling' - One of the splinter groups of photographers that descended on Boyle last Wednesday evening.

Taking advantage of a very fine evening, this month's meeting deviated slightly from the usual format and consisted of an informal photo shoot about Boyle. Members met at the earlier time of 7.30pm on the Crescent and broke into a number of groups. The promise of a light-filled evening was short lived however as the unexpected darkening clouds played havoc with ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed settings and rickety tripods! However, this did not take away from an event that was as much about getting out and talking about light and photography as much as it was about attempting to capture it. Members regrouped at the Moving stairs to discuss their exploits over a sociable drink and contemplate the forth coming exhibition at the end of the month.

Members who wish to submit photos taken on the evening should email them to info@boylecameraclub.com Photos will be available to view HERE.

Photo Shoot in Carrick-on-Shannon

Sunday's Photo Shoot couldn't have been planned for a nicer day. The pleasant and warm summer sun was with us, 23 members took part, Carrick-on-Shannon looked resplendent and the short few hours we were there did not give us nearly enough time to take as many photographs as we would like. "A return visit" was a call I heard expressed and one I will certainly endorse.
Carrick-on-Shannon is our neighbour and as a County Town it is surely a most attractive one. "Mini City" might be an apt description, but in a nice way. The old town is still there, and now, down every laneway there are new developments.
St. George's Church is a credit to those involved. I was delighted to meet with John Breaden, one of its inspired and dedicated committee. John issued a welcome to the club to return and then he will be happy to give us the full tour, a talk on the history of Carrick and show us an accompanying video in the adjoining Centre's excellent Cinema Room.
My own set of photos are viewable [here...]

Club Meeting - Wednesday 10th June

Conor's IPF Distinctions Presentation
Conor Dowling presents his IPF Distinctions submission at this month's club meeting.

This month's main presentation was delivered by Competitions Secretary, Conor Dowling. Conor, who was recently awarded his Licentiate from the Irish Photographic Federation, discussed the process of preparing for the IPF Distinctions. He presented his 'panel' of 10 printed photos based on a 'Wildlife' theme and brought the club through the submission criteria. Conor is hopeful that his success will encourage other club members to consider preparing for the Distinctions awards and he is happy to advise interested members in a formal workshop in advance of the next awards selection due to take place in October.

Members considering applying for an IPF Distinction would do well to read the handbook published by the Royal Photographic Society which is available to download HERE.

The first round of submissions for the club's Annual Exhibition were also prepared and presented by Conor. The theme for this year's exhibition is 'Love Where You Live' and members are asked to send in their best photos for consideration. It was agreed that the standard of members work continues to improve and that another fine exhibition will be mounted as part of the Boyle Arts Festival in July.
A Sub-Committee to coordinate and organise the exhibition was elected.

Members are asked to submit an additional TWO photos on the 'Love Where You Live' theme for this month on or before 1st July.

Achill Island Photo Shoot - A Great Success

BCC Achill 01 - Tony Murphy
Boyle Camera Club Members square-up to the vista views on Achill during the recent weekend photo shoot.

Photographers from Boyle Camera Club took up residence on Achill Island, Co. Mayo for what will hopefully become an annual Summer Weekend Photo Shoot. The event was attended by 28 club members, most arriving on the Island on Friday night to prepare for the 4am sunrise shoot on Saturday morning. Achill enjoyed a weekend of glorious sunny weather while most of the country experienced heavy cloud cover, icy winds and rain.

Dawn Patrol Achill - Tony Murphy
Dawn Patrol - Doogort Beach, Achill Island.

18 photographers took to the beach at Doogort at dawn in time to catch the sun breaking over the horizon at 5.12am. A perfect start to the day which saw members travel to various stunning and dramatic photographic locations on the island. Day 1. ended with a fine feast for the tired and hungry photographers, hosted by Chris, Veronica and Ger at Doogort and the contingent finished with a night-cap in Lynott's bar. The sun continued to shine on Sunday which saw the club tour the Atlantic Drive before heading home.
It was unanimously agreed the the event was a great success, thanks in no small part to the great efforts and organisation skills of club treasurer, Chris O'Connor. Plans are already underway for the next weekend trip!

Members photos from Achill can be viewed HERE.

Next Meeting of Boyle Camera Club will take place this Wednesday, 10th June 2009 in The Moving Stairs, Boyle at 8pm.

Thoughts From The Web 01

"Think of a landscape photograph as a jigsaw puzzle, with dozens of different pieces demanding your attention. If you arrange all those pieces in the right order you'll end up with an organised, structured image that makes sense and looks good. But if you put them together any old way, the end result will be a muddled mess of shapes, colours and details that's difficult to make sense of."

Safety & Health at Work - Photo Competition

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work would like to invite you to take part in their new photography competition. This competition encourages everyone and anyone to send in their photographs on the theme of Safe and Healthy Working Environments.

They want participants to be as imaginative and creative as possible, and to explore ways in which photography can highlight the need for safe and healthy workplaces.

WHAT’S YOUR IMAGE OF SAFETY AND HEALTH AT WORK?

The competition challenges everyone living in the EU to grab their camera and capture their own image of safety and health at work. Place the human being at the heart of your photograph and share your perspective on what it means to be safe in the workplace.

The public will select their favourite photograph through an on-line poll. The deadline for submission of entries is 15th of August 2009.

More details on how to enter, prizes, etc, HERE.

Thanks Paraic for bringing this to our attention.

Club Meeting - Wednesday 13th May

We had a full agenda to cover at this month's meeting which was chaired by Peter Boalch and was very well attended despite the beautiful Summer evening.
In this month's presentation, Tony Murphy addressed the mystery that is Digital ISO, in the third and final element of talks on 'The Exposure Triangle' series.

Conor Dowling presented the club's first Photo Competition, the theme was Springtime and members photos were judged by photographer, Anthony Hobbs, Head of Fine Art Media at the NCAD. Anthony's critique on the members photos and the competition results can be viewed HERE. He was particularly impressed by the quality of entries in the Intermediate and Beginners categories.

Conor announced the competition for 'Summertime' and encouraged members to make the most of the coming weeks to considers submissions before the closing date on 31st July.

June Motivation and Arts Festival Exhibition

The Motivation theme for June is 'Love Where You Live'. Members are asked to submit 2 images to info@boylecameraclub.com before 3rd June.

Boyle Camera Club will be presenting a Photographic Exhibition of members images as part of this year's Boyle Arts Festival. The theme of the exhibition is also, 'Love Where You Live'.
Members images will be selected from this month's Motivation for inclusion in the exhibition, so members that have not been regularly sending in their work, do make an extra effort this month to make a submission!
More details on the exhibition will follow. The club hope to establish a sub-committee to help organise the event, interested members can contact the club secretary via info@boylecameraclub.com.

At this month's meeting, members broke into groups to discuss issues relevant to Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced categories. The outcome of these discussions will be catalogued and addressed by the committee and communicated to membership at the next club meeting.

Club member and globe-trotter, Paraic Brennan, concluded the meeting with a very fine presentation showing images he has collected from his travels in Ireland and abroad. It was very much a case of 'every picture tells a story' and Padraic kept members entertained, as much by his fine stories as looking at his excellent images.
